Grenaa Gymnasium is here today to present our social-studies project that we have worked on for many long months. We were split up in country groups and expected to make a fact sheet about the national political systems of the countries. In every country group, we had a “representative” from the relevant country – meaning a person that was born in that country that helped us understand the subtle workings of the parliamentary systems.
Today, the country groups of Syria and Lithuania are here to talk about the process and journey to complete the project, that our esteemed social studies teacher entrusted us to fulfill. Through searching the World Wide Web, we were able to dig up the hidden truths of many major countries’ political systems. In addition to this, our personal knowledge of the individual countries contributed to fill the factsheet with vast amounts of information.
Syria was especially hard to find information about because of the Syrian government controlling most media outputs. Along with this the war in Syria made the search for information even muddier as the information that we found, often conflicted with other sources. Luckily for this project, we have two students from Syria in our class and as always, they were happy to help explaining which sources could be trusted.
The Lithuanian research focused on the parliamentary systems, political parties, human rights and foreign policies. It was easy to find information for this group because the Lithuanian-speaking girls were able to read websites in Lithuanian and find information not available in English. Many of the websites had an overflow of useless information hard to steer around, but in the end, we did manage to finish it with only including information of the most utter importance.
When we were all done polishing our fine fact sheets a presentation was expected of every country group. This was without a doubt the best thing of this journey. The political systems of the world are very different and we tend to forget this – the fact sheets opened our eyes to the world.
